Steam at the iron ore mine Grube Fortuna

The mine is located about 50 km north of Frankfurt, Germany near the city of Wetzlar. It has been closed down in the 1960's, but a club of volunteers has kept it open for visitors.

The club members offer guided tours of the mine, which take about 2 hours. There is a restaurant and a museum, hiking trails are in the nearby, and so there are a lot of reasons to visit this area.

The main attraction for a railfan is the narrow gauge railroad, which operates on weekends. The tour is very short at the moment, so it is easy to follow the locomotive on the trip and take pictures.

It is a perfect place for the whole family even for a rainy weekend. I have more pictures on a photo page.

The museum is open:
March to November: Tu-Fr 9 am to 4 pm, Sa/Su 9am-5pm. Closed on Mondays (except holidays).Closed from December to February: The last guided tour starts 1 hour before closing.

The timetable for 2001 shows the days of operation for the railroad.
